After the fall of mainland China, many idealists joined the exodus to the south. The Grand Lineage, Loyalty and Filial Piety, Benevolence and Righteousness, the Constitution of the Republic of China, Democracy, Freedom, the Traditional Written Characters, Arts and Culture, Integrity and Rectitude, each and all of them are henceforth preserved in this world, which in turn laid the foundation for the rejuvenation of the Republic of China one day.
Seventy five years after the fall of mainland China, the virtues, meritorious services and writings of the southbound generation have been largely forgotten and lost, memories of the old capital are faraway and imperceivable. Affairs in the world can call for heartbreak and remorse.
The Studio of Prunus Ode has thus collected many inkworks from those years, and compiled them into Mountains Ablaze–Exodus and Restoration, Preliminary Catalogue of Inkworks, Books, and Artefacts by Personages of the Republic of China 1946-1987. Although this Preliminary Catalogue is full of lacunae and carelessness, but traces from the past, are perhaps ample to invoke longing and homage.

Sayings of President Chiang Kai-shek, copied by President Yen Chia-kan of the Republic of China
The year I was born, the communists had already seized mainland China for thirteen years. I have not been able to witness the vistas of Old China. In the following decades, mainland China was repeatedly drenched in oceans of blood. Time, memory, human affairs were obliterated without trace. Since my prime, I have lived in Taiwan. I am thus able to investigate the true history of China, use proper Chinese written characters, relish in the social customs of Confucianism, receive protection from the Constitution, enjoy freedom of speech, and repeatedly cast the sacrosanct ballot of elections. These experiences are only possible due to the Restoration of Taiwan to Chinese rule after winning the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in the 34th year of the Republic of China (1945), and the withdrawal of the Central Government of China to Taiwan after the fall of mainland China to the communists in the 38th year of the Republic of China (1949), building Taiwan into a political base to restore mainland China.

Those who took part in this grand exodus from mainland China upheld and advanced the Spirit of Righteousness the ancients long advocated, they cultivated a pristine land for Free China, they preserved proper Chinese written characters and safeguarded traditional Chinese culture. Such are their contributions to the Chinese race that are viewed as unequalled in history.
In 1966, the Chinese Communist Party launched the “Cultural Revolution” and rigorously carried out the campaign to “Destroy the Four Olds”. It aimed to eradicate the so called “old ideas, old culture, old customs, and old habits”. Historians describe this “revolution” as an unprecedented catastrophe in Chinese history. To counter this catastrophe, the late President Chiang Kai-shek implemented the Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement. The mission was “To revive Chinese culture by fully propagating the traditional virtues of benevolence and righteousness, refining the national character, and forging the ethos of an era.” Hence proper Chinese written characters and the Three Principles of the People are still retained in the domain of Taiwan.

In the 101st year of the Republic of China (2012) and the 104th year of the Republic of China (2015), I organized two successive exhibitions in Hong Kong, titled Mountains Ablaze-Foreign Devils and Chinese Patriots 1839-1911, and Mountains Ablaze-The Republic and the Sino-Japanese War 1912-1946. These exhibitions showcased inkworks by over one hundred and thirty prominent figures from late Ch’ing to the early Republican period. In the 101st year of the Republic of China (2012), I started to plan an exhibition sequel titled Mountains Ablaze-Exodus and Restoration 1946-1987. In keeping with the concept of the previous exhibitions, inkworks and artefacts are used to configure a portrait of modern China. By combining the three catalogues of Foreign Devils and Chinese Patriots 1839-1911, The Republic and the Sino-Japanese War 1912-1946, Exodus and Restoration 1946-1987, a total of one hundred and forty eight years are covered, with works by over four hundred and thirty eminent figures, three hundred of whom belong to the category of Exodus and Restoration. Like gems in nature, they are too miniature to tell the entirety, yet being rare and precious, they are ample to inspire homage.

In 2023 last year, the British Museum published Creators of Modern China, 100 Lives from Empire to Republic 1796-1912. Its editorial approach is similar to Mountains Ablaze-Foreign Devils and Chinese Patriots 1839-1911. Many of the historic figures represented in both publications are common to each other. As for the two historic periods covered by Mountains Ablaze-The Republic and the Sino-Japanese War 1912–1946 and Mountains Ablaze-Exodus and Restoration 1946-1987, most Western and Chinese scholars are sufficiently cautious to steer clear to avoid likely controversies. So I foolishly boast about my two catalogues as unprecedented works.
Vice President Wu Den-yih, also Chairman of the Chinese Nationalist Party, speaking at the opening ceremony of the exhibition The Decimation and Revival of Chinese Culture 1949-1976: Exhibition of Works by Selected Personages
In the 108th year of the Republic of China (2019), I had the opportunity to curate The Decimation and Revival of Chinese Culture 1949-1976: Exhibition of Works by Selected Personages in Te-ch’un Art Gallery at the Art Centre of National Taiwan Normal University. The exhibition space was deemed generous, occupying two floors and three rooms, yet it was altogether inadequate to display the huge amount of works by the large number of historic figures active in the years between 1949 and 1976. As it was not possible to exhibit all relevant pieces, only a selection from Exodus and Restoration was displayed. In view of this, offering the full catalogue of Mountains Ablaze: Exodus and Restoration 1946–1987 to scholars and enthusiasts now, will not only address the disappointments of past shortcomings, but may also help to promote Exodus and Restoration internationally as an important field of academic studies. The complete title of this catalogue is finally set as: Mountains Ablaze-Exodus and Restoration, Preliminary Catalogue of Inkworks, Books, and Artefacts by Personages of the Republic of China 1946-1987.
After winning the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the National Government returned to the capital Nanking from the wartime capital Chong-ch’ing on 5 May 1946. View of a decorative arch to celebrate the return of the National Government in Nanking
Exodus and Restoration begins in the 35th year of the Republic of China (1946), as the National Government, after winning the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, returned to the capital Nanking from the wartime capital Chong-ch’ing on 5 May that year, marking the beginning of an era. Exodus and Restoration ends in the 76th year of the Republic of China (1987), with the death of President Chiang Ching-kuo on 13 January 1988, marking the closure of an era.
China Times Newspaper in Taiwan reporting on the death of President Chiang Ching-kuo on 13 January 1988
Reflecting on the past, of all those southbound personages whom we recall and admire, how many should we here accentuate? After years of collecting, there are just a meagre three hundred, too few to paint the full picture of heroism and greatness of the exodus. I am embarrassed that my ability falls so short, yet I have already been exhausted by this toil. It has not been easy to seek a few written words, a sheet of letter, a piece of calligraphy, or a scroll of painting. Works by prolific artists are of course plentiful, but works by eminent men and women in other fields are encountered only by chance, sometimes very rarely seen. If the Central Government had mustered their resources to collect inkworks by those from the exodus, the collection could have been so abundant and astounding. Yet for decades, there is no such undertaking, it is clear such hope should be abandoned. Time flies, traces disappear, something seen in a moment cannot be found again. I have therefore disregarded my inadequacy, searched despite my limitations, hold on to the odd acquisition dearly, document everything attentively, especially hoping that those who understand will judge me kindly.
During my time as a student in England, I often visited the library of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. One day, I came across a small, hardback book with black-and-white photographs of calligraphy and paintings by Ming loyalists, published by a collector who had migrated to Hong Kong. Even though the photographs were basic and low-quality, the admiration I felt at the time remains vivid in my memory after many decades. Now, as I proofread Exodus and Restoration, even without inserting any image, I find myself overwhelmed with emotions, even more intense than before. Ancient catalogues of calligraphy and paintings use words alone to engage the imagination of readers to roam the spiritual realm of art. Besides, this catalogue of inkworks are by those personages from the exodus, it is a register of loyalty, a chronicle of rectitude, and it calls out for our heart and soul to join.
Studying the lives and achievements of recent personages has both benefit and drawback. The benefit lies in the availability of documentary evidences, while the drawback is the strong possibility of oversight. When they are distant, it is easier to identify their achievements. When they are near, it is harder to recognize their virtues. Even if one knows the life of an eminent person thoroughly, the catalogue is still dependent on the availability of extant works. To attempt an inclusion without the relevant inkwork is still futile. So occasionally photographs and books are documented instead. The hardships involved in compiling this catalogue are evident.
The work of the compiler cannot be accomplished overnight. I recall my late friend Mr. Chang Shou-p’ing (張壽平) meeting me for lunch every Thursday at Yin-i Restaurant. We would sit at the same table and order the same dishes, a routine that went on for fifteen or sixteen years, almost unaffected by downpours or storms. On those Thursdays in the six years from the 101st year of the Republic (2012) to the 106th year of the Republic (2017), we constantly evaluated the personages in Exodus and Restoration, discussed their lives and achievements, and determined their inclusions or exclusions. In May of the 108th year of the Republic (2019), Mr. Chang passed away at the age of ninety-six. He did not live to see the final version of Exodus and Restoration. In a flash, twelve years have passed by since I began the first draft.
Portrait of Ku Yen-wu
I once read the Foreword of A Record of T’ang and Sung Loyalists (唐宋遺民錄序) by Ku Yen-wu (顧炎武 1613-1682). It says:
“Mr. Chu collected and edited many old stories. He obtained A Record of Sung Loyalists (宋遺民錄) by Ch’eng Kuang (程廣 1425- ?), and enlarged the number of loyalists to over four hundred. He wrote to ask me for a foreword. Perhaps he could not find someone near, and sought for someone thousands of miles away. As for the loyalists of the Sung dynasty, as long as there is one word or one deed, or just one name recounted in the works of one or two prominent men, he will chronicle them all into his book. I may say he cannot find a companion among his contemporaries, instead his mind wanders off to dwell on those a thousand years ago.”
Loyalists in history swore allegiance to the tenets of Confucius, they resisted the occupying dynasty by fortifying their personal integrity. Ku Yen-wu observed that as time went by, there were fewer and fewer Ming loyalists, thus he commented: “He cannot find a companion among his contemporaries, instead his mind wanders off to dwell on those a thousand years ago.” People with integrity and rectitude are rare throughout history. Humans are servile by nature, those who flatter the powerful and embrace the strong are everywhere. Exodus and Restoration also evaluates human worthiness on the basis of integrity and rectitude. Even though those who took part in the exodus to Taiwan were in a far better situation than the loyalists in history who lost their country, yet great danger loomed everywhere, few were willing to risk all.
Furthermore, Ku Yen-wu said:
“For over twenty years, I have traveled to the east and west of the mountains, to the south and north of the rivers. Humans are less and less like humans. When I enquire after those noble and celebrated gentlemen from the past south of the Yangtze River, they have changed their outlooks and inner selves. They have learned to become inhuman. Hence Mr. Chu has undertaken to produce this book, to preserve the memory of humanity in this world.”
Since time immemorial, those who shift loyalties are as innumerable as grains of sand on the beach. Exodus and Restoration is also looking to preserve the memory of humanity in a nebulous world.
Most humans are unsteady, time erodes their resolve, many willingly capitulate early on. Those who sustain their rectitude to the end, defy old age and sickness with loyalty and fortitude, wrestle poverty with purity of heart, and battle tenaciously the infinite trials along the life journey to death. Exodus and Restoration is imbued with the fragrance of the noble prunus.
In the past dozen years, I have come across inkworks by certain well known figures whose characters were tarnished, thus excluded from Exodus and Restoration. They are: Chang Hsüeh-liang (張學良), Sun Li-jen (孫立人), Sheng Shih-ts’ai (盛世才), and Ku Yü-hsiu (顧毓琇). According to the veteran diplomat Mr. Fu Wei-hsin (傅維新), when the communist general-secretary Jiang Zemin visited America and went to Ku Yü-hsiu’s residence, Ku had already removed beforehand all inkworks originally hanging on the interior walls by senior figures of the Republic of China, thus revealing his servile and sycophantic character. Exodus and Restoration represents a collection from one family, the view of one individual, adulation and animosity can be crystal clear.

The three hundred and four personages in Exodus and Restoration are arranged chronologically by their dates of birth and death. Those who sacrificed their lives for the cause of the Republic of China are placed at the beginning of each category. For example, President Tai Chi-t’ao (戴季陶) of the Examination Yuan is placed second in the category of Political Leaders, Secretary General Ch’en Pu-lei (陳布雷) of the Central Committee of the Chinese Nationalist Party is placed first in the category of Political Personages, Deputy Director Tai Li (戴笠) of the Bureau of Investigation and Statistics is placed first in the category of Military Leaders, Radio Host Lin Pin (林彬) at Commercial Radio Hong Kong is placed first in the category of Personages in Hong Kong.

In the early years of the Republic of China, a large number of talented individuals appeared and were enlisted into government services. There were many acknowledged polymaths, posing great difficulties for categorization. For instance, in the category of Political Leaders, President Yu Yu-jen (于右任) of the Control Yuan is noted for his mastery of cursive script calligraphy and is a celebrated calligrapher. However, President Yu also held various official positions, such as Minister of the Interior (內務總長), Provincial Governor of Shan-hsi Province (陝西省政府主席), and President of the Control Yuan (監察院院長), as well as the honorific title of Revolutionary Elder. Hence his inclusion here. In the category of Political Personages, Director Chu Chiu-ying (朱玖瑩) is well-known for his calligraphy, yet he served as Director of the Salt Administration (鹽務總局局長), a role vital to people’s livelihood. Hence his inclusion here. In the category of Military Leaders, although Squadron Leader Mo Chi-p’eng (莫紀彭) indulged in calligraphy in his late years, he was once appointed squadron leader of the assault team during the pivotal Huang-hua-kang Uprising (黃花岡起義衝鋒隊隊長). Hence his inclusion here. In the category of Classical Writers, Mr. P’u Yu (溥儒) excelled in calligraphy and painting, however traditional Chinese culture values literature foremost. Hence his inclusion here. In the category of Kung-fu Master, Mr. Cheng Man-ch’ing (鄭曼青) was proficient in poetry, calligraphy, painting, medicine, and Tai-chi. His accomplishment in Tai-chi was particularly notable. Hence his inclusion here.

The categories of Painters, Opera Singers, Musicians and Architect only focus on those who adhered to Chinese traditional art. The category of Painters lists traditional artists who worked with brush and ink, such as Professor Wu Tzu-shen (吳子深) and Mr. Chang Dai-chien (張大千). The category of Opera Singers features Mr. Ch’i Ju-shan (齊如山), renowned amateur singer of Peking Opera, and Ms. Chang O-yün (章遏雲), distinguished professional soprano of Peking Opera. The category of Musicians features ku-cheng (古箏) and ku-ch’in (古琴) players, such as Mr. Liang Tsai-p’ing (梁在平) and Mr. Jung T’ien-ch’i (容天圻). The category of Architect lists Mr. Yang Cho-ch’eng (楊卓成), master of Chinese traditional architecture.
The category of Citizens features ordinary citizens whose personal letters reflect the turmoil of the times.

The categories of Personages in Hong Kong, Personages in Singapore and Personages in America chronicle those who, instead of coming to Taiwan, went to Hong Kong, Singapore, and the United States. When mainland China fell to the communists, it was difficult to travel to Taiwan, while leaving Canton for Hong Kong was a much easier option. Personages in Hong Kong includes figures like Major General Tu Yüeh-sheng (杜月笙) and President Ch’ien Mu (錢穆) of New Asia College. Personages in Singapore has the least number of people, listing Minister of Finance Liu Kung-yün (劉攻芸). Personages in America includes Premier Koo Vi Kyuin (顧維鈞) and Academician Chao Yuen Ren (趙元任).

To preserve a name for posterity relies on a written biography. In ancient China there is the Local Gazetteer, keeping the names of many known and lesser known local figures. But in a disintegrating world, where can human traces be found? In Exodus and Restoration, there are many familiar figures, yet some are virtually unknown to most. In the category of Captured Loyalists, Mr. Ch’iu Yao-ch’ing (裘堯卿) and Major Yüeh Cheng-wu (岳正武) were assigned to espionage and military missions in mainland China where they were unfortunately captured. They endured years of torture, and after decades of imprisonment, finally returned to Taiwan. Throughout their ordeals they were steadfast in their loyalty to the Republic of China. In the category of Classical Writers, there is Mr. Tu Yen (杜宴), a poetry companion of the eminent poet Huang Chieh (黃節 1873-1935). His name is not documented anywhere else. In the category of Calligraphers, there is Mr. Mao Shu-chün (毛樹駿), one of the nine senior scholars in Taiwan who attained their public examination qualifications in the Ch’ing dynasty. They are known as P’eng-shan Ch’iu-lao (蓬山九老), the nine venerable elders. He also wrote the calligraphy on the tombstone of Mr. P’u Ju.

The shortcomings of Exodus and Restoration are only too blatant. Each of the thirty three categories can benefit from additional content. For instance, the category of Scientist is represented by one person, the category of Chinese Doctor is represented by one person, the category of Musicians is represented by two persons, and the category of Kung-fu Master is represented by one person. Expanding each category to include ten persons will make them far more substantial. However, this will require specialists in each field to generously offer their full resources.
Portrait of Ch’en Li
Those listed in Exodus and Restoration certainly possessed at least one of the three immortalized attainments propagated by Confucianism: to cultivate virtue, to render meritorious service, to produce writings worthy for posterity. Chen Li (陳澧 1810-1882) the distinguished scholar of late Ch’ing, once said: “Politics is to do with talented people, talented people is to do with scholarship”. To understand how the Republic of China has managed to stand resiliently in a century of upheavals, do look around this world of talents and scholarships. If the virtues, meritorious services and worthy writings of these eminent men and women are amalgamated and cast as exemplars and principles to salvage our world, the mindset of our world may change, a new path for our country may be forged despite current setbacks.
In a few sexagenarian cycles or a few dozen sexagenarian cycles from now, readers of Mountains Ablaze - Exodus and Restoration, Preliminary Catalogue of Inkworks, Books and Artefacts by Personages of the Republic of China 1946-1987 will not only connect spiritually with the loyal and the righteous, but will also revisit those years when Chinese traditional culture was saved by a few from extermination. Some ardent souls will kneel and weep.
